Prior to SQL Server 2012, the maximum server memory value only applied to the bufferpool, so customers needed to limit the amount of memory the bufferpool could use to save memory for the operating system and other processes. I tend to recommend increasing this value to a higher number after examining the Plan Cache.

Here are the contenders I am going to compare (using SQL Server 2012, 11.00.2316, on a Windows 7 VM with 4 CPUs and 8 GB of RAM): CLR. He spent a lot of time fine-tuning this CLR function to efficiently parse a string. It’s fast, too, but it’s not perfect.
