When I joined Microsoft in 1993, I would embark on a 25 year journey working only on Windows laptops and Windows Server computers. Last October we released SQL Server 2017 including support for Linux and Docker Containers. So here in this blog post, I will show you my journey in taking the SQL Server Mac Challenge.

My personal opinion is that I don't see a widespread need for more capacity given horizontal scaling and servers that can already exceed 1 Tbyte of DRAM; bandwidth is also helpful, but I'd be concerned about the increased latency for adding a hop to more memory.

This slowdown may be mitigated in Windows 11 but in the latest Windows Server editions – where it matters most – this bug is alive and well. I’d been testing on a virtual machine in a data center that I had access to, purely because this machine has an internet connection that runs at over 2 Gbps. Case closed. well spent.
