Four years ago, as part of our AWS fast data journey, we introduced Amazon ElastiCache for Redis , a fully managed, in-memory data store that operates at microsecond latency. While it can occasionally be a specific server or even an application within a data center, it's predominantly the data center itself. If the content is readily available, the CDN delivers it straight away, negating the need to retrieve it from the origin server. Sadly, data on latency is harder to get, even from Google's perch, so progress there is somewhat more difficult to judge. So it's an educated guess with some padding built in to account for worst-case content-construction (which is more common than you or I would like to believe).
