I'm sure this delivered large performance improvements and I wouldn't try arguing against it. While that Java change led to discovering countless performance wins in application code, libc was still breaking some portion of the samples (as pictured in the example at the top of this post) and preventing off-CPU flame graphs.

The usual caveats also apply: Performance is a deep and nuanced domain, and much can go wrong beyond content size and composition. How sites manage resources after-load can have a big impact on perceived performance. Until and unless teams have better data about their performance, the global baseline budget should be enforced.

If you've been working in the performance space for a while and you hear me start to talk about page growth, I'd forgive you if you started running away. ;). How does page bloat affect other metrics, such as Google's Core Web Vitals? Image size is another issue, as excessive image weight hurts your SEO ranking in Google Image Search.

Back in 2016, I gave a talk outlining the causes and effects of the terrible performance of web apps built using popular tools on the fastest-growing device segment: low-end to mid-range Android phones. The focus of most published research in architecture is on applications implemented in high-performance, “ close-to-the-metal” languages essentially developed before computers got fast. The current state-of-the-art Python compiler, pypy , often yields around a 2x improvement in performance (and sometimes less).
