USENIX SREcon APAC 2022: Computing Performance: What's on the Horizon

Brendan Gregg

My personal opinion is that I don't see a widespread need for more capacity given horizontal scaling and servers that can already exceed 1 Tbyte of DRAM; bandwidth is also helpful, but I'd be concerned about the increased latency for adding a hop to more memory. It's an important vendor-neutral space to share the latest in technology.

Expanding the Cloud - Cluster Compute Instances for Amazon EC2.

All Things Distributed

During my academic career, I spent many years working on HPC technologies such as user-level networking interfaces, large scale high-speed interconnects, HPC software stacks, etc. When instances are placed in a cluster they have access to low latency, non-blocking 10 Gbps networking when communicating the other instances in the cluster.

Platform Adjacency Theory

Alex Russell

In each quantum of time, hardware and OS vendors press ahead, adding features. As OS and hardware deployed base integrate these components, the set of what most computers can do is expanded. This is often determined by hardware integration and device replacement rates. Same with IDEs and developer tools.

The Performance Inequality Gap, 2021

Alex Russell

Hardware Past As Performance Prologue. Regardless, the overall story for hardware progress remains grim, particularly when we recall how long device replacement cycles are: Tap for a larger version. Sadly, data on latency is harder to get, even from Google's perch, so progress there is somewhat more difficult to judge.

Hobson's Browser

Alex Russell

Understanding how mobile OSes undermine browser choice requires a nuanced understanding of OS and browser technology. The power dynamics of these situations are starkly different, even though "web technology" is used to render content in each case. Hardware access APIs, notably: Geolocation. How bad is the situation?
