The protections are hardware implemented and cannot be forged in software. And this all has to work for whole-system executions, not just the C-language portion of user processes.

As a Xen guest, this profile was gathered using perf(1) and the kernel's software cpu-clock soft interrupts, not the hardware NMI. Microbenchmark os::javaTimeMillis() on both systems. Running this on the two systems saw similar results.
