As a Xen guest, this profile was gathered using perf(1) and the kernel's software cpu-clock soft interrupts, not the hardware NMI. I happened to be speaking at a technical confering while still debugging this, and mentioned what I was working on to a processor engineer. At least AWS have now included it in their recommendations.
