In an ideal world, pages served to mobile devices should be under 1 MB – and definitely not more than 2 MB – but I often see pages in excess of 5 MB.

And if that already wasn’t enough, the number of images on a page has been linked to lower conversion rates on retail sites. Having said that, looking at data over the past ten years, it's safe to make the observation that pages are definitely trending bigger. These numbers should not be taken as a benchmark for your own site.
