A Cassandra database cluster had switched to Ubuntu and noticed write latency increased by over 30%. I happened to be speaking at a technical confering while still debugging this, and mentioned what I was working on to a processor engineer. We ended up setting it in the BaseAMI for all cloud services.

I don’t need more bandwidth for video conferences or movies, but I would like to be able to download operating system updates and other large items in seconds rather than minutes. There are impressive estimates for latency for 5G, but reality has a tendency to be harsh on such predictions. We won’t need to worry about backups.

Here's some output from my zfsdist tool, in bcc/BPF, which measures ZFS latency as a histogram on Linux: # zfsdist. Tracing ZFS operation latency. Xen's biggest user is the Amazon EC2 cloud, which has over one million customers, and appears to be a custom version (it self identifies as version "3.4.3.amazon").

This is why most AWS regions have three availability zones.

The success of our early results with the Dynamo database encouraged us to write Amazon's Dynamo whitepaper and share it at the 2007 ACM Symposium on Operating Systems Principles (SOSP conference), so that others in the industry could benefit. Manageable – The service would need to be easy to manage and operate.
