In comparison, on-premises clusters have more and larger nodes: on average, 9 nodes with 32 to 64 GB of memory. On-premises data centers invest in higher capacity servers since they provide more flexibility in the long run, while the procurement price of hardware is only one of many cost factors.

Some time ago I participated in design of a backend for one large online retailer company. Taking into account the previous considerations, performance requirements were set as 1000 faceted navigation requests/second per typical hardware blade. Storage nodes are basically Coherence storage nodes.
