I ended up developing a fix for the JVM c2 compiler which Oracle reworked and added as the -XX:+PreserveFramePointer option in JDK8u60 (see my Java in Flames post for details [ PDF ]). I spent years as a cloud customer where I couldn't access many HW-level things.) The actual overhead depends on your workload. So what's next?
