As is the case with many other developers, the reports over the last few years of the huge energy requirements of the web have prompted me to take a look at my own websites and see what I can do to minimize their impact. But first, a confession: When I first heard about the environmental impact of websites, I didn’t quite believe it.

It’s connected to the white plastic Noon Extension switches via Bluetooth Low Energy, and since they are all in the same room, the signal doesn’t have to go through walls to get there. Hardware installation was a lot of work but not too frustrating, I did it in about two days over the holidays. The Noon switches only control lights.

My home internet connection gives me somewhere around 3 Mbps down. Hardware gets better, sure. Cennydd also makes the case that performance also has an impact on energy consumption: In 2016, video, tracking scripts and sharing buttons caused the average website to swell to the same size as the original version of Doom.
