I ended up developing a fix for the JVM c2 compiler which Oracle reworked and added as the -XX:+PreserveFramePointer option in JDK8u60 (see my Java in Flames post for details [ PDF ]). We may get there with future technologies I'll cover later. The actual overhead depends on your workload. And this isn't even all of them.)
