The version of this on [ietf.org] links to a PDF scan of a hand drawn load average graph from July 1973, showing that this has been monitored for decades: source: [link]. Anyway, the following patch seems to make the load average much more consistent WRT the subjective speed of the system. Network I/O? Which type of I/O?
