Building Netflix’s Distributed Tracing Infrastructure

The Netflix TechBlog

Investigating a video streaming failure consists of inspecting all aspects of a member account. If we had an ID for each streaming session then distributed tracing could easily reconstruct session failure by providing service topology, retry and error tags, and latency measurements for all service calls.

Step #3: Tagging of services. A key concept in monitoring is proper tagging. Tagging allows you to better organize your monitoring data. There are multiple ways to define tags and metadata in Dynatrace : Manual Tagging : Put them on service and the process group via the UI or the Dynatrace API.

AIOps automates DevSecOps workflows to enable self-healing IT

Dynatrace

Dynatrace’s AIOps platform uses causation-based, deterministic AI to spot potential slowdowns and outages before they occur and to trigger automated actions that prevent failures. “Instead of the trigger being a failure, our trigger is a point of time before failure,” Swofford says.

Don’t Sink Your Website With Third Parties

Smashing Magazine

Single Points of Failure (SPOFs). Configuring WebPageTest to run a test measurement that simulates a failure of the Google Fonts third-party service. By far, the most impactful change you can make is to remove any obsolete, unused, or unnecessary third-party tags from your site. Are you using one (or more than one) tag manager?

What is distributed tracing and why does it matter?

Dynatrace

Distributed tracing follows an interaction by tagging it with a unique identifier, which stays with it as it interacts with microservices, containers, and infrastructure. Detect unforeseen behavior that results from automated scaling, making it easier to prevent and recover from failures. Dynatrace news.

What is a Distributed Storage System

Scalegrid

Their design emphasizes increasing availability by spreading out files among different nodes or servers — this approach significantly reduces risks associated with losing or corrupting data due to node failure. This approach not only facilitates consistent accessibility but also safeguards against potential node failures.

Connect Fluentd logs with Dynatrace traces, metrics, and topology data to enhance Kubernetes observability

Dynatrace

Processing plugins parse (normalize), filter, enrich (tagging), format, and buffer log streams. Both approaches automatically add pod name, namespace, container name, tags, labels, and more to each log file. Output plugins deliver logs to storage solutions, analytics tools, and observability platforms like Dynatrace.
