Those memes that were super popular a couple of years ago show how you, your family, friends, and boss see your job vs. what you actually do. “Making sure we’re doing the right things” — that’s a one-sentence catchphrase I tell my relatives when asked what is Product Management all about.

With a tool like Percona Backup for MongoDB (PBM) that plays a crucial role in securing the database known to handle humongous data loads, there is no space for inefficiency. We’re actively listening to the requests of our paying customers as well as to our community of users. This release is a very good display of how your feedback matters!

What’s new in Percona Backup for MongoDB 2.4.0?

Outside of the bug fixes included with the release, we’re happy to share these user request-driven improvements:

Clean-up reinvented. With time, the backups you configure for your databases may grow by a lot. Having a choice between logical, physical, and even a snapshot-based backup, we see our users often configuring more than one type of backup at once. This is one of the issues that so far has made the backup cleanup not as easy as it could be. We have now introduced serious improvements to clean up capabilities that PBM comes with regarding the existing backups. One of such capabilities is to allow backup clean-up based on the backup type.

Huge data set and not as huge oplog. The good practice is to have oplog configured big enough to cover your database during the whole time it takes it to do a full backup. What if your database backup is simply too big and your oplog is not large enough? To make sure you are covered in those situations, we decided to keep the PITR oplog slicing while taking the database snapshot.

ARM architecture support. With the growing popularity of ARM64 architecture and the infrastructure cost savings it allows, this was a request our users have been vocal about. You can find ARM support for these operating systems:

  • Ubuntu 20.04
  • Ubuntu 22.04
  • RHEL8
  • RHEL9

What’s next?

There are changes under the hood that we are driving towards having a better solution regards backup management in Percona Monitoring and Management (PMM). We also have a long-term goal of bringing our physical backup capabilities on par with logical backups.
