When it comes to animation, AVIF performs as well as Safari’s <img src=mp4> , outperforming GIF and WebP at large , but MP4 still performs better. For background images, if you want to be even more aggressive than that, you can add the image as a regular image with <img src> , and then hide it off the screen.
