Database Resolutions for 2018

January 12, 2018

The New Year brings about the perfect time to start fresh and set some new goals. So, in the spirit of things, we’ve laid out a few New Year’s resolutions that all database professionals can take into account as they look to turn over a new leaf in 2018 and build on their successes.

Create Better, Real-Time Customer Experiences

In the summer of 2017, we partnered with research firm Vanson Bourne to conduct a study on the importance of real-time experiences for today’s consumers. Those findings are detailed in our report, The Psychology of Waiting: The Business Impact of Diminishing Consumer Patience. What we found is that immediacy, accuracy, and relevancy are crucial and already expected in the eyes of consumers, and the results of not delivering on that expectation will cost brands their customer base.
Resolution: In 2018, make it a top priority to create a better – more real-time – experience for your customers.

Detect and Prevent Fraud Before It Occurs

Fraud — It’s a concept that’s been around since the dawn of commerce. Advancements in technology have allowed attackers to take fraud to a new level, turning it into both a science and an art form. And It isn’t restricted to financial institutions; fraudsters all over the world are figuring out how to make money illegally across a wide range of industries like telco, adtech, transportation, utilities, government, healthcare, and retail.
Resolution: In 2018, consider leveraging technologies that enable real-time predictive fraud detection and prevention. Fraud is a $100B+ problem that you can solve – both your company and customers will be happy you did.

No More Eventual Consistency

Our co-founder, 2014 Turing Award winner, Mike Stonebraker, has a saying: “Eventual consistency means ‘creates garbage.’” One of the suggested benefits of eventual consistency systems is that they support high availability across multiple data centers. But the biggest downside? These systems are fundamentally non-transactional (they lack ACID compliance).
Resolution: For anyone whose system relies on accurate, always-guaranteed transaction processing, make 2018 the year you move away from eventual consistency.

Prepare for the Future

From the IoT, to 5G, to blockchain, it seems like we’re on the precipice of seeing some truly game-changing technologies come into their own; you don’t want to be left behind when they finally do breakthroughs.
Resolution: In 2018, think about the gaps you may have in your database stack that would prevent you from taking full advantage of the next wave of the technology revolution.
