Cache and Prizes

Alex Russell

Browsers will cache tools popular among vocal, leading-edge developers. There's plenty of space for caching most popular frameworks. The best available proxy data also suggests that shared caches would have a minimal positive effect on performance. Browsers now understand the classic shared HTTP cache behaviour as a privacy bug.

The Performance Inequality Gap, 2023

Alex Russell

TL;DR : To serve users at the 75 th percentile ( P75 ) of devices and networks, we can now afford ~150KiB of HTML/CSS/fonts and ~300-350KiB of JavaScript (gzipped). This is a slight improvement on last year's budgets , thanks to device and network improvements. This is an ethical crisis for the frontend. 2023 Content Targets #.

Average Page Load Time in 2021

MachMetrics

Website performance & speed plays a major role in the success of an online business. Many people often confuse site speed with page speed grades of performance testing tools, which are actually calculated based on multiple factors of a page including its loading speed. Daniel An, Google, 2017.

Bringing Rich Experiences to Memory-constrained TV Devices

The Netflix TechBlog

Some of the metrics we use to measure performance on the Netflix TV app include animation frames per second (FPS), key input responsiveness (the amount of time before a member’s key press renders a change in the UI), video playback speed, and app start-up time. The majority of legacy devices run at 28MB of surface cache.

The Performance Inequality Gap, 2021

Alex Russell

TL;DR: A lot has changed since 2017 when we last estimated a global baseline resource per-page resource budget of 130-170KiB. A then-representative $200USD device had 4-8 slow (in-order, low-cache) cores, ~2GiB of RAM, and relatively slow MLC NAND flash storage. Modern network performance and availability. Hard Reset.
